Servers are an application or device which performs service to connected clients as a part of client server architecture. It may also be a computer system which is made to run a certain server application. Servers also may serve applications for users in an intranet.
Workstations are personal computers that are being used for high end applications such as CAD, 3D design, graphic design, CPU and RAM intensive programs or for video editing. Workstations mostly have fast processors, a number of hard drives and a lot of its RAM memory. It may also have a special audio, video or processing card for the special editing work. Workstations are in fact marketed by computer manufacturers for the professional users and servers on the other hand are utility devices. Both of it are part of a networking architecture, but they differ with its uses and functions.
Differences on Functionality
Servers are the ones that keep files like images, video, html and applications that are made available for the client to access. Also, it allows many computers for sharing the applications. The main function of workstations is to complete high end applications like graphic designing and video editing.
Workstations are made to be used only for just one person at a time, but it can be remotely accessed by other users if needed. Servers works by connecting users and this only have one or no users.
A workstation is designed purposely for specific tasks that involves video or graphic editing, statistical data or other things that involves mathematical calculations. Servers on the other hand are made for networking.
A server can in fact be of different types. A good example in this case would be web servers and application server. The workstations are used on certain types which can actually be integrated with microphones, synthesizers, hard disc arrays for video editing and for digital video connections. A video workstation is used for non-linear digital editing on videos.
A workstation have high quality Graphical User Interface (GUI) and it comes with efficient video and audio qualities for video or audio editing. A server lacks the GUI and also other elaborate video and audio interface.
There are multiple differences with a server and a workstation. The two of it are in fact designed with a specific purpose. A server is in fact made for multifunctionality or in handling various tasks simultaneously and to maintain different connections and to respond on different requests. Workstations on the other hand does not need to hold that many connections, but it only needs to have a fast processor for it to handle different running applications.
